Relations between South Korea and Israel have reached a new low following sharp criticisms from President Lee Jae-myung regarding alleged human rights violations. The dispute, which ignited over a controversial social media video, has triggered a series of heated exchanges between Seoul and Israeli officials.

The tension began when President Lee commented on a viral video purportedly showing Israeli forces mistreating a Palestinian youth. On Friday, Lee posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "I must verify the authenticity of this—and if true, what measures have been taken in response." While the exact origins of the footage remain unverified, it has sparked widespread international discourse.

In a swift rebuttal on Saturday, the Israeli Foreign Ministry dismissed the video as "anti-Israel propaganda" and misinformation. Their statement criticized the South Korean President for referencing what they claimed was a "settled incident from 2024" shared by a discredited account. Israeli officials maintained that the matter had already been investigated and resolved.

Despite attempts by the South Korean Foreign Ministry to frame the President’s remarks as a "universal call for human rights," President Lee doubled down on his stance. In a subsequent response to media reports, he expressed disappointment over the lack of self-reflection regarding international law and human rights. "It is disheartening that there is no consideration for the global outcry against the suffering caused by such violations," Lee remarked.

Historically, South Korea has maintained a balanced diplomatic posture in Middle Eastern conflicts. However, this direct confrontation marks a significant shift in tone, testing the resilience of bilateral ties between these two key international partners.
