The Iraqi Parliament has elected Nezar Amedi as the nation’s new President, a move that signals the end of a prolonged political stalemate. Amedi, representing the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), secured a decisive victory on Saturday during the second round of parliamentary voting.

Amedi garnered 227 votes, comfortably defeating independent candidate Muthana Amin Nader, who received only 15 votes. With this election, Amedi becomes the sixth head of state since the 2003 military intervention that led to the removal of Saddam Hussein.

In his inaugural address, President Amedi acknowledged the significant challenges facing the nation. He pledged to collaborate closely with all three branches of government and emphasized a "Iraq First" policy. Notably, he condemned the recent escalations on Iraqi soil stemming from regional conflicts.

The election took place against a backdrop of heightened tensions. In late February, retaliatory strikes between international forces and regional actors led to attacks on bases and diplomatic missions within Iraq, resulting in casualties among Iraqi military personnel.

The focus now shifts to the appointment of a Prime Minister, a process that has historically been politically sensitive. Under the power-sharing agreement established post-2003, the presidency is held by a Kurd, the premiership by a Shia Muslim, and the speakership by a Sunni.

President Amedi has 15 days to formally invite the nominee from the largest parliamentary bloc to form a government. The Prime Minister-designate will then have 30 days to assemble a cabinet. Amedi, 58, is a veteran politician who previously served as a senior advisor to two former presidents and held the position of Minister of Environment from 2022 to 2024.
