The United Kingdom has welcomed the decision to extend the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, while calling for a swift return to negotiations and the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report by Iran International.
On Wednesday, UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the extension of the ceasefire was a positive step. She emphasized the need for renewed dialogue, a comprehensive agreement, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz without any restrictions or tolls.
Cooper warned that a return to conflict would have serious consequences not only for the Middle East but also for the global economy and the cost of living worldwide.
Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump claimed that Iran is facing severe financial strain due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, he said Tehran is eager to reopen the waterway to avoid economic collapse.
“Iran is financially collapsing! They want to open the Strait of Hormuz immediately. The country is desperate for money,” Trump wrote.
He added that Iran does not want to keep the strait closed, as reopening it could generate up to $500 million in daily revenue, while continued closure would result in equivalent losses.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes, and any disruption there can significantly impact global energy markets and economic stability.
