After a long gap, voting has begun in local government elections in Palestine, but political analysts are raising serious concerns about their purpose and effectiveness. The process is being viewed by many as a “box-ticking” exercise by the Palestinian Authority (PA) to demonstrate democratic credentials to the international community.

According to a report by Palestinian journalist Nour Odeh from Al-Bireh, the reality on the ground paints a different picture. Analysts say the PA is attempting to show that it is enabling democracy and political participation, but public trust in the process has significantly eroded.

For many Palestinians, especially in Gaza Strip and the West Bank, daily survival has taken precedence over electoral politics. While Gaza residents struggle to survive amid ongoing conflict, those in the West Bank face economic hardship, increasing pressure, and policies imposed by Israel. In such circumstances, many question how much these elections can address their fundamental challenges.

In Ramallah—the administrative center of the PA—there is effectively no real competition. Only one list, aligned with the Palestinian Authority, has been submitted, leaving residents without a genuine choice in selecting their representatives. Similar situations have been reported in more than half of the councils across the occupied West Bank.

Changes in electoral laws have also led major political parties and factions to distance themselves from the process. Although there are multiple competing lists in some areas like Al-Bireh, critics argue that key political forces have been sidelined, diminishing the competitiveness and credibility of the elections.

Analysts emphasize that for many Palestinians, particularly in the West Bank, the primary concern is survival. With a shrinking economy and increasing restrictions linked to the Israeli occupation, participation in elections has become a secondary priority.

There are growing concerns that unless these elections genuinely reflect the will of the people, they may ultimately serve as a political tool aimed at satisfying international donors rather than addressing local needs.

Since October 2023, the ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in a reported death toll exceeding 72,000, with more than 172,000 injured. Despite a nominal ceasefire lasting several months, continued daily strikes have led to further casualties, underscoring the broader humanitarian crisis overshadowing the electoral process.
