West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reportedly suffered a significant electoral defeat in her own constituency, losing to Suvendu Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

According to a report published on Monday by Anandabazar Patrika, Banerjee, who had previously lost to Adhikari in Nandigram five years ago, has now been defeated again—this time in Bhabanipur, her own stronghold.

The report noted that Adhikari had directly challenged Banerjee by contesting from her constituency. Despite being considered the “home turf” of Banerjee, she was unable to secure victory. The symbolic framing of the constituencies also drew attention: Banerjee had earlier referred to Bhabanipur as her “elder sister” and Nandigram as her “middle sister.” Having lost in Nandigram previously, this new defeat in Bhabanipur carries added political significance.

In the earlier Nandigram contest, Banerjee lost by a margin of 1,956 votes. This time, the margin has widened substantially, reportedly exceeding 15,000 votes.

Following his victory, Adhikari stated that he dedicated the win to those who had sacrificed their lives for Hindutva. He added that defeating Banerjee was essential and claimed that her political career had effectively come to an end.
