Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy announced on Thursday.
Carson was recognized for creating a new literary form through a creative dialogue with classical literature. The academy honored her for her bold and innovative body of work, which has pushed the boundaries of contemporary literature.
Carson’s full name is Anne Patricia Carson. She was born on June 21, 1950, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Throughout her career, she has combined poetry, translation and university teaching. She is particularly known for works that blur the boundaries between poetry, fiction and academic scholarship.
Last year, Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Since the Nobel Prizes were first awarded in 1901, the Literature Prize has been awarded 118 times. A total of 122 writers have received the prize, including 18 women. On four occasions, the Literature Prize has been shared by two laureates.
The Swedish Academy keeps the nomination and selection process for the Literature Prize confidential for decades. The names of nominees are not made public for 50 years, making it difficult to know with certainty who will win before the official announcement.
