Muslim Ummah of North America - MUNA, the largest Islamic organization of Bangladeshi-Americans, has expressed deep sorrow and condolences at the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

In a joint condolence statement issued on Tuesday, December 30, MUNA National President Imam Delwar Hossain and National Executive Director Arman Chowdhury expressed profound grief over her demise.

In the statement, the leaders said,

“Begum Khaleda Zia’s struggle for the establishment of democracy in Bangladesh transcended all groups and political ideologies. Her leadership and contributions will remain eternally remembered in the nation’s history.”

They prayed for the forgiveness of the departed soul and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family as well as to the people of Bangladesh.

The statement further noted that Begum Khaleda Zia was one of the most influential political figures in Bangladesh’s history. By assuming office as the country’s first female Prime Minister in 1991, she made history and led the nation toward democratic transition during a critical period. Her long and impactful political career left a far-reaching influence on Bangladesh’s political landscape and served as a strong source of inspiration, particularly for women’s participation in public life and national leadership.

At this moment of national mourning, the MUNA leaders, on behalf of the Bangladeshi-American community, offered prayers to Almighty Allah for the maghfirah (forgiveness) of Begum Khaleda Zia and expressed solidarity with the grieving nation.

They also expressed hope that the life, struggle, and contributions of the uncompromising leader Begum Khaleda Zia will continue to inspire the people of Bangladesh toward peace, stability, and unity.
