Saudi Arabia is expected to experience severe weather conditions during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage, with authorities warning of intense heat and dust storms across several regions.

According to the National Center for Meteorology (NCM), dust- and sand-laden winds may affect parts of Najran, Riyadh, the Eastern Province, the Northern Borders region, Al-Jouf, and Tabuk.

The weather authority also forecast thunderstorms and possible rainfall in Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, and mountainous areas around Mecca.

Although weather conditions are expected to remain generally stable along the main roads connecting Medina, Mecca, and the holy sites, daytime temperatures are forecast to range from very hot to extremely hot. Large numbers of pilgrims are already travelling along these routes ahead of the official start of Hajj activities on May 25.

Temperatures in Mecca could rise to 47 degrees Celsius, while Medina may see highs of 44 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels are also expected to reach up to 40 percent, accompanied by dusty winds in open areas.

According to a report by the Saudi Press Agency, the meteorological authority has urged pilgrims and travelers to prepare their vehicles before travelling, follow safety guidelines, and drink enough fluids to avoid dehydration.

At least 1.6 million pilgrims are expected to gather in Mecca for this year’s Hajj, one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings. As a result, Saudi authorities are placing special emphasis on weather preparedness and public safety.

Although the core Hajj rituals take place in Mecca and nearby holy sites, many pilgrims also visit Medina before or after completing Hajj. While visiting Medina is not a mandatory part of Hajj, the city holds deep spiritual and historical importance for Muslims, leading many pilgrims to spend several days there during their journey.
