Water levels at nine monitoring points across five rivers in Bangladesh's northeastern and southeastern regions remain above the danger level due to an active monsoon and heavy upstream rainfall, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).

In its observation report released at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, the FFWC said water levels have also reached the warning level at nine additional monitoring stations, raising concerns over possible flooding in low-lying areas if conditions deteriorate further.

According to the report, the Sangu River at Bandarban and Dohazari, the Matamuhuri River at Lama and Chiringa, the Kushiyara River at Markuli and Fenchuganj, the Manu River at the Manu Railway Bridge and Moulvibazar, and the Khowai River at Balla are all flowing above the danger level.

Among these, the Sangu River at Bandarban recorded the highest level, flowing 95 centimetres above the danger mark.

Meanwhile, water levels at nine other stations on the Teesta, Kushiyara, Surma, Someswari, and Little Feni rivers have reached the warning level, increasing the risk of flooding in adjacent low-lying areas.

The FFWC reported that during the past 24 hours, the highest rainfall in the region was recorded at Cherrapunji in India's Meghalaya state with 109 millimetres, while Bangladesh's highest rainfall was recorded in Chattogram at 203 millimetres.

According to the centre, of the 127 river monitoring stations under observation, water levels increased at 79 stations, decreased at 43, and remained unchanged at five.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has urged residents living in low-lying riverbank areas to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by local authorities as the flood situation continues to evolve.
