Bangladesh to Open New Consulates in China, Germany and Brazil to Boost Trade and Diplomatic Ties

The Bangladesh government has decided to establish three new Consulates General in Guangzhou, China; Frankfurt, Germany; and São Paulo, Brazil, as part of a broader effort to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations, expand consular services for expatriates, and promote trade and investment.

The decision was communicated in a letter issued on Aug. 31 by the Policy and Organization Wing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the ministry, proposals have been sent to the Ministry of Finance to incorporate the required personnel, vehicles, and office equipment into the organizational structure of the new missions. The letter also states that the Ministry of Public Administration has already granted the necessary administrative approval.

The Foreign Ministry said the three cities are strategically important for Bangladesh's diplomatic, commercial, and consular interests.

It said the initiative aims to enhance Bangladesh's diplomatic presence in key global economic regions, safeguard national interests amid evolving geopolitical realities, strengthen the country's international profile, and deepen economic and trade partnerships.

Guangzhou

Guangzhou, one of southern China's leading commercial and port cities, hosts a significant number of Bangladeshi businesspeople, students, and expatriates. The region also plays an important role in Bangladesh's trade, including the garment sector and other export industries.

Bangladesh currently operates diplomatic missions in Beijing and Kunming. However, the Foreign Ministry noted that the considerable distance between those missions and Guangzhou has made it difficult to effectively oversee diplomatic and consular activities in southern China.

The new Consulate General is expected to strengthen Bangladesh's diplomatic engagement in the region while expanding services related to trade, investment, and the Bangladeshi community.

Frankfurt

The decision to establish a Consulate General in Frankfurt reflects Germany's growing importance as one of Bangladesh's key economic and diplomatic partners.

Germany is among Bangladesh's largest export markets, while the European Union remains the country's principal export destination.

In 2024, bilateral merchandise trade between Bangladesh and Germany reached approximately €9 billion. The two countries also cooperate in areas including climate action, renewable energy, governance, migration, skills development, and sustainable supply chains.

Located in one of Europe's leading financial and business hubs, the Frankfurt mission is expected to support Bangladeshi businesses seeking investment opportunities while making consular services more accessible for the Bangladeshi diaspora in Germany.

São Paulo

The planned Consulate General in São Paulo is intended to expand Bangladesh's diplomatic and commercial footprint in Latin America.

Brazil is South America's largest economy and a key member of the BRICS grouping. Political and diplomatic engagement between Bangladesh and Brazil has also increased in recent years.

As Brazil's largest industrial and commercial center, São Paulo offers significant opportunities for trade, investment, and business partnerships. The new mission is expected to facilitate Bangladesh's access to Latin American markets while strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation with Brazil.

Expanding Bangladesh's Global Presence

A government official familiar with the initiative said the establishment of the three new consulates would significantly expand Bangladesh's diplomatic presence across three major economic regions—Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

The official added that the new missions will also enhance the government's ability to provide faster and more efficient consular services to Bangladeshi citizens living and working in those regions while supporting the country's broader economic diplomacy objectives.
