U.S. Secret Service Protecting Iranian President During UN General Assembly: CNN

The U.S. Secret Service is providing security for Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, according to CNN, citing U.S. officials.

Officials said security for other members of the Iranian delegation is being handled by the U.S. State Department's Diplomatic Security Service.

The New York Police Department's Intelligence Bureau is assisting federal agencies in protecting President Pezeshkian and other members of the Iranian delegation. Officials said detectives, intelligence personnel, and members of the NYPD Highway Patrol have also been deployed as part of the security operation.

Iran, a founding member of the United Nations, has participated in the annual General Assembly for decades. However, officials described this year's Iranian delegation as attracting an unusual level of attention compared with recent years, given the ongoing state of hostilities between Iran and the United States, the host country of the UN headquarters.

The annual UN General Assembly brings together world leaders in New York under extensive security arrangements coordinated by U.S. federal authorities, the State Department, and local law enforcement agencies.
