Voter Awareness Program Encourages Bangladeshi-Americans to Engage in U.S. Elections

A community voter awareness program was held in Warren, Michigan, to encourage greater participation of the Bangladeshi-American community in the U.S. electoral process.

Organized by MUNA Alliance for Peace and Justice - APJ Action, the event took place on the evening of Sept. 20 at Alif Restaurant under the theme, "Your Vote Matters." The program aimed to raise awareness about voting rights, voter registration, and civic participation among Bangladeshi-Americans.

The event was chaired by Shahedul Islam, President of the Bangladeshi-American Forum, and moderated by community activist Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury.

Among the speakers were Christina Hymes, candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives; Dr. Nazmul Hasan, Vice Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party; Dr. Ahmed Ghanim; Tonya Myars Phillips, candidate for State Representative; Amir Makhlouf, a member of the University of Michigan Board of Governors; Dr. Teresa Brooks, candidate for the Michigan State Senate; and Waliur Rahman, National Executive Member of MUNA.

Speakers noted that although the Bangladeshi-American community has continued to grow in both population and economic contributions, its participation in the U.S. political and electoral process has yet to reach its full potential.

They emphasized the importance of voter registration, casting ballots regularly, and engaging with elected officials at the local and national levels to ensure that the community's interests are effectively represented.

The speakers also stressed that a community's political influence is largely determined by the number of its citizens who vote and actively participate in the policymaking process. They encouraged younger generations of Bangladeshi-Americans to become more involved in politics, public service, and civic engagement.
