In the United States, the race for mayor in New York City has witnessed a record number of early votes. Democrat candidate Zohran Mamdani is currently leading in the polls.
But his candidacy has sparked intense opposition. Critics, including political rivals and some Jewish religious leaders, have launched campaigns encouraging voters not to support Mamdani.
This election is being watched closely, as it could potentially make Mamdani the first Muslim mayor of New York City. With early voting showing a significant lead over his opponents, Mamdani has attracted liberal voters by promising free public transportation, child care services, and rent forgiveness for nearly a million New Yorkers. He is also known for his outspoken criticism of Israeli actions in Gaza, which has fueled some of the backlash against him.
Opposition to Mamdani is not only coming from political adversaries. Several prominent figures, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, have labeled him an "Islamist" and questioned the feasibility of his economic promises. Cuomo, in particular, has criticized Mamdani’s platform as financially unsustainable.
Moreover, reports from The Times of Israel indicate that Jewish communities in New York are mobilizing against Mamdani, fearing his views on Israel could incite anti-Semitism. In response, over a thousand rabbis across various cities in the U.S. have signed a petition urging voters not to support Mamdani. These religious leaders claim that he is spreading anti-Semitic rhetoric due to his consistent criticism of Israeli policies, particularly regarding Gaza.
The petition, which has already gathered more than 1,000 signatures, is considered a rare and significant event in American political history. Those who have refused to sign the petition are also being targeted by anti-Mamdani factions, with some facing public vilification.
The highly contested election is set for November 4, and all eyes are on whether Mamdani can overcome the growing opposition and make history as New York City's first Muslim mayor.
