Former US President Donald Trump said in a message published Monday that he no longer feels obliged to act solely in the name of peace after failing to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, according to correspondence sent to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

In the same message, Trump reiterated his desire for the United States to take control of Greenland, the autonomous Danish territory, saying it was necessary for global security.

In his message to Støre, Trump wrote that Norway’s decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize—despite what he described as his role in ending eight wars—freed him from feeling constrained to pursue peace alone. While peace would remain a “main issue,” he said he could now focus more on what he believes is best for the United States.

The Norwegian prime minister’s office confirmed the authenticity of the message to AFP. In a written response, Støre stressed that the Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded by the Norwegian government but by an independent Nobel Committee, a point he said he had clearly explained to Trump.

Trump again raised his controversial proposal to take control of Greenland, arguing that Denmark is unable to protect the territory from Russia or China. He questioned Denmark’s historical claim over Greenland and said the world would not be safe unless the United States exercised “full and absolute control” over it.

Trump has repeatedly claimed he deserved last year’s Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end multiple conflicts. However, the award was given to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who accepted the prize in Oslo last month after fleeing Venezuela. Machado later dedicated the award to Trump and presented him with the medal last week.
