In a statement released Friday, CENTCOM said the aircraft crash was not caused by hostile fire, enemy action, or friendly fire, but rather resulted from a serious accident.
Posting on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), CENTCOM confirmed that six crew members were on board the aircraft at the time of the crash. Four of them died in the incident.
Earlier, U.S. Democratic Congressman Jim Himes told the BBC program Newsnight that determining the exact cause of the crash would take time. He noted that such incidents can occur during periods of conflict.
“Even the most powerful military forces experience accidents,” Himes said, adding that they were hoping for the safety of the crew members. “When a country is involved in war, incidents like this can come at a cost.”
The U.S. Air Force’s Air Mobility Command operates a fleet of nearly 400 aerial refueling tanker aircraft. These aircraft play a critical role during military operations by supplying fuel mid-air to fighter jets and bomber aircraft, allowing them to carry out long-range missions without landing.
