US President Donald Trump has called on five additional countries to send warships to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz to help keep the vital maritime route open and secure.
Trump made the appeal in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.
In the post, he said many countries will coordinate with the United States to deploy naval forces to ensure that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and safe for global shipping.
He specifically mentioned China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, saying that since these countries are directly affected by the crisis, they should also send naval forces to the region.
Trump also announced that the United States will soon begin escorting oil tankers traveling through the strait with US Navy protection. Speaking to reporters on Friday, he said the escort operations would begin “very soon.”
Due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, nearly all ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been halted.
Normally, about one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas passes through this route. The narrowest part of the strait is only about 54 kilometers wide.
Trump claimed that the United States has already destroyed “100 percent” of Iran’s military capabilities. However, he acknowledged that Iran could still launch attacks on the waterway using drones, mines, or short-range missiles.
He warned that if Iran continues to disrupt shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the United States will carry out large-scale bombing along coastal areas and destroy Iranian naval vessels.
“We will very soon make the Strait of Hormuz open, safe, and free again—by any means necessary,” Trump said.
