US President Donald Trump has sharply criticized NATO, while also issuing a warning regarding Greenland.

In a post on Truth Social on Thursday, Trump said NATO “was not there when we needed it, and it will not be there in the future.” He described Greenland as “a large, badly managed block of ice.” Trump further accused NATO of refusing to participate in the US-Israel operations against Iran.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte responded after a private meeting at the White House, stating that Trump is “clearly frustrated” with allied countries. Rutte noted that while some NATO allies provided bases, logistics support, and airspace access, not all contributed fully, which explains some of Trump’s dissatisfaction.

Regarding questions about whether the US-Israel military actions against Iran violated international law, Rutte stated that the actions did not, emphasizing the importance of limiting Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities—a long-standing NATO priority. He added that extensive support exists to prevent Iran from ever acquiring such capabilities.

On Trump’s hardline stance against Iran, Rutte declined to comment directly but affirmed his support for the President’s objectives. He noted that a large part of Europe also supports efforts to reduce Iran’s destabilizing capabilities.

Rutte also accused Iran of assisting Russia in its war in Ukraine. While European nations prefer diplomatic solutions, Rutte warned that delays in negotiations could allow Iran to achieve nuclear capabilities, drawing a comparison to the “North Korea situation.”
