The Supreme Court of the United States ruling that invalidated certain tariffs imposed by Donald Trump has triggered a wave of refund applications, with U.S. importers seeking to recover an estimated $166 billion in duties.

According to a court filing submitted Tuesday, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has rejected about 15% of refund claims processed through its newly launched online portal. The system, introduced on April 20, was designed to handle the large volume of applications following the court’s February 20 decision.

In a progress report filed with the U.S. Court of International Trade, CBP Executive Director Brandon Lord said that around 13.3 million import entries passed initial screening. However, roughly 15% of those were later denied after failing “entry-specific validation” checks.

CBP stated that applicants whose claims were rejected can correct errors and resubmit their requests.

The filing also noted that refund processing has begun for approximately 1.74 million approved entries. Earlier government data showed that the disputed tariffs had been collected on about 53 million import entries.

CBP previously warned that claims may be denied if submitted data is incorrectly formatted, contains file errors, or if the applicant is not a listed importer or an authorized broker.
