The State Department has announced a significant crackdown on individuals with substantial child support arrears. Under a newly highlighted enforcement policy, citizens who owe significant amounts in child support will face the revocation of their passports.

While federal guidelines allow for action against those owing more than $2,500, authorities have indicated that the focus will primarily be on parents with "notable" outstanding balances.

According to officials, the move is a common-sense measure designed to ensure that parents fulfill their legal and moral obligations to their children. The department emphasized that strengthening the enforcement of these laws is crucial for the overall welfare of children across the country. Those currently in arrears are urged to settle their debts with relevant agencies immediately to avoid losing their travel privileges.

Once a passport is revoked, it becomes invalid for any travel. Furthermore, the State Department clarified that individuals will remain ineligible for a new passport until their child support debt is fully resolved. Although a 1996 federal law provides the authority for such revocations, it was previously enforced primarily during the passport renewal stage. This shift signals a more proactive approach by the authorities to address non-compliance.
