Vance and Netanyahu Hold Candid Talks on Iran War and Diplomacy in Washington

U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a private meeting in Washington on Tuesday night, during which they openly discussed their long-standing differences over the Iran conflict and diplomatic strategy.

According to U.S. and Israeli officials, the meeting was “candid” and “direct,” focusing on disagreements that have emerged between the two leaders since the start of the Iran war.

Vance has been regarded as one of Netanyahu’s most prominent critics within President Donald Trump’s inner circle since the conflict began. As the war continued, he reportedly became increasingly critical of the Israeli prime minister’s approach.

Reports indicate that Vance played a significant role in shaping U.S. policy during the conflict and in negotiations with Iran. He was particularly influential in efforts to preserve the U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Netanyahu, meanwhile, strongly opposed the agreement but refrained from publicly criticizing it, reportedly believing the deal would eventually collapse on its own. It ultimately did so several weeks later.

U.S. and Israeli officials said tensions between the two leaders had been building for some time. Netanyahu was said to be dissatisfied with Vance’s public criticism of his government.

Vance, for his part, accused Netanyahu of encouraging opposition to the memorandum and failing to demonstrate sufficient loyalty to President Trump. Netanyahu also privately criticized Vance’s role in managing the conflict, according to the report.

Vance reportedly believed that Netanyahu was using close allies and pro-Netanyahu media outlets in both the United States and Israel to wage a political campaign against him and weaken his standing.

Tuesday’s meeting at Blair House was viewed by officials as an opportunity for both leaders to address misunderstandings and ease tensions.

A senior Israeli official said Netanyahu raised concerns about Israel’s standing within the Republican Party and discussed Vance’s recent criticism of the Israeli government.

“It was a candid and straightforward discussion,” the official said. A U.S. official offered a similar assessment, describing the talks as direct.

The Office of the U.S. Vice President declined to comment on the meeting.

Officials did not indicate whether the discussions had significantly improved relations between Vance and Netanyahu.
