The discussion in the National Parliament on Sunday regarding the implementation process of the July National Charter concluded without any consensus. The ruling party, BNP, supports implementing the charter with the note of dissent, while opposition parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami and NCP, have called for broader constitutional reforms.
During the debate, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed stated that BNP is committed to fully respecting all provisions of the July Charter and insisted that it is not a pseudo-law. He highlighted key issues such as limiting the Prime Minister’s tenure to ten years, ensuring the full independence of the judiciary, and reflecting the independence of 1971 and the July uprising in the constitution. Law Minister Md. Asaduzzaman added that the charter reflects the will of the people, and no alternative procedure is required.
Opposition leaders, however, stressed the need to reform parts of the constitution that have historically facilitated authoritarian rule. Jamaat-e-Islami leader Shafiqul Rahman assured full cooperation in constitutional amendments and lawmaking, while NCP member Akhtar Hossain emphasized the role of the Constitutional Reform Council in implementing fundamental changes to the constitutional framework.
After participation by nine members, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed adjourned the session until 3:30 PM on Monday.
