Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed stated on Sunday that the opposition is attempting to politicize certain ordinances hastily issued by the interim government. Speaking at a briefing in the Secretariat, the Minister assured that more comprehensive laws regarding enforced disappearances, human rights, and the Supreme Court Secretariat would be formulated following thorough discussions with stakeholder
"Not everything within those ordinances was perfect," the Home Minister admitted, noting his own personal experience as a victim of enforced disappearance. He emphasized that the government is committed to enacting robust legislation on this issue. Addressing the opposition's recent actions, he noted that while walking out of Parliament is a procedural right, the grounds for their protests were based on misinformation.
Minister Ahmed clarified that the ordinances, which the opposition had previously submitted notes of dissent on, were presented in their original form. He further addressed the controversy surrounding the July Memorial Museum, explaining that the government had to amend a clause that would have allowed the curator to remain in the position indefinitely unless they resigned voluntarily.
Regarding the recent referendum, the Home Minister explained that it was conducted by the Election Commission under the Referendum Ordinance. He noted that while legal challenges were raised regarding the President’s authority in this matter, the referendum holds its validity. He concluded by stating that should the need arise in the future, new legal frameworks for referendums could be discussed.
Law Minister Md. Asaduzzaman and Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni were also present at the press conference.
