Global earthquake activity surged within a 24-hour span, with earthquake-monitoring website EarthquakeTracker.com reporting 94 tremors worldwide. The anxiety in Bangladesh has grown further as Dhaka and surrounding areas experienced three mild earthquakes on Saturday—just hours after Friday’s strong jolt.
Experts warn that such frequent seismic activity is not a good sign.
According to the platform, 91 earthquakes occurred globally in the past day, while a total of 852 quakes were recorded over the past week.
On Friday, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook Bangladesh, rattling Dhaka and multiple districts. Panic-stricken residents rushed out of buildings, with some even jumping from structures in fear. So far, at least 10 deaths—including children—have been reported: five in Narsingdi, four in Dhaka, and one in Narayanganj.
The first quake on Saturday struck at 10:38:12 a.m., measuring 3.3 in magnitude, with its epicenter in Palash, Narsingdi—29 km from Dhaka.
Later in the evening, two back-to-back tremors shook the capital’s Badda area:
6:06:04 p.m. — Magnitude 3.7, epicenter in Badda
6:06:05 p.m. — Magnitude 4.3, epicenter in Narsingdi
The quakes were so close in time—just one second apart—that many residents felt them as continuous shaking.
Cracks were reported in several buildings across different areas, and in some cases, structures were found leaning. The repeated tremors, coming before fear from Friday’s quake had subsided, have deepened public anxiety.
Seismologists emphasize that such frequent tremors, especially near a densely populated capital, indicate rising seismic stress—signaling that Bangladesh must brace for potential future events.
