A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s northeastern region on Friday, 12 December, prompting a tsunami warning of waves up to one meter high, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The quake hit off the coast of Aomori Prefecture at 11:44 a.m. local time, Reuters reported. It came just days after a stronger, 7.5-magnitude earthquake rattled the same region on Monday night, heightening concerns about continued seismic instability.
Authorities said the latest tremor originated at a depth of about 20 kilometers (12 miles) beneath the Earth’s surface. Following Monday’s quake, the Japanese government had already issued a special advisory for residents from northern Hokkaido down to Chiba, east of Tokyo, warning that the likelihood of another powerful earthquake within a week had increased.
Japan sits atop some of the world’s most active seismic fault lines and remains one of the most earthquake-prone countries globally, experiencing tremors roughly every five minutes. Officials are monitoring the situation closely as coastal residents remain on alert for potential tsunami activity.
