Iran has unveiled three major breakthroughs in nuclear science with applications in medicine and research, alongside the official launch of its National Nuclear Network.
The announcements were made on Monday at a ceremony held at the Tehran International Exhibition Center, attended by Iranian Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref and Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami.
During the event, the Nuclear Science and Technology Research Institute introduced three key innovations. These include Gallium-68, a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical primarily used to detect metastatic melanoma; Lutetium-177, a therapeutic radiopharmaceutical effective in cancer treatment; and a fully automated medical device designed for the treatment of bone pain.
The ceremony also marked the formal inauguration of Iran’s National Nuclear Network, which the government says aims to enhance the country’s nuclear research capacity and strengthen collaboration among related institutions.
AEOI chief Mohammad Eslami stated that transforming innovation and research ideas into tangible products has become the organization’s top priority. He noted that Iran announced the production of 50 radiopharmaceuticals at the same exhibition in 2023. That number has since increased to 70, with an additional 20 radiopharmaceuticals currently in the research and development phase.
Analysts say these advancements are expected to further consolidate Iran’s capabilities in medical science and nuclear research.
