As sensitive diplomatic talks over Iran’s nuclear program continue between the United States and Iran in Oman, Washington has imposed fresh sanctions on Iran’s oil transportation network. The US State Department announced the measures on Friday, targeting what it described as Tehran’s so-called “shadow fleet” of oil tankers.
Under the latest round of sanctions, 15 entities, 14 vessels, and two individuals have been designated. The Trump administration claims that Iran uses this covert shipping network to evade international sanctions and sell oil, with the proceeds allegedly funding armed groups and contributing to regional instability.
In a statement, the State Department said, “Instead of investing in the welfare of its people or in infrastructure, Iran’s ruling establishment spends its resources on repression and instability around the world.”
The announcement came at a time when US and Iranian officials are holding indirect talks in Muscat, facilitated by mediators. These discussions mark the first formal engagement between the two countries since the recent escalation in tensions between Israel and Iran. The US delegation at the talks includes former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
While Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the talks as a “good start,” the White House issued a firm warning. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that alongside diplomacy, the Trump administration’s policy of “maximum pressure” would continue, adding that the military option remains on the table if necessary.
US officials have made it clear that such sanctions will persist as long as Iran continues to violate international regulations on energy exports. Last year, Washington also imposed sanctions on oil tycoon Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani.
Analysts say the move reflects a dual-track strategy by the United States—maintaining pressure through sanctions while engaging Iran at the negotiating table—in an effort to gain leverage in the ongoing talks.
