Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has urged US President Donald Trump to engage in direct dialogue instead of making what he described as “random comments” on social media, after Trump announced plans to send a US hospital ship to the Arctic island.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said he was dispatching a ship loaded with medical supplies to Greenland, claiming that “many people are sick and not receiving proper healthcare” on the island.
Responding to the claim, Nielsen said Greenland does not require such assistance.
“Our answer is — no thank you,” he said. “Greenland has a public healthcare system that provides free medical services to all citizens.”
Trump has long expressed interest in bringing the vast Arctic territory under US control and had previously suggested he would not rule out acquiring it. In January, however, he said he would not seize the island by force. He later floated the idea of a “framework for a future agreement” involving the United States and Greenland — a proposal firmly rejected by Denmark and NATO allies, who made clear they would not entertain any move undermining Greenland’s sovereignty.
In his latest post on Saturday, Trump said he and his envoy on Greenland affairs, Jeff Landry, were sending a large hospital ship to care for people allegedly lacking adequate treatment. He added that the vessel was “on its way.”
The post included an AI-generated image resembling the USNS Mercy, one of two hospital ships operated by the US Navy. It remains unclear whether Trump was referring to one of the actual vessels or what prompted the decision.
In a Facebook statement, Nielsen reiterated that Greenland operates a government-funded healthcare system where treatment is provided free of charge. “This is not like the United States, where visiting a doctor costs money,” he wrote.
While maintaining that Greenland remains open to cooperation with the United States, Nielsen stressed the importance of direct communication.
“Instead of making more or less random remarks on social media, speak with us directly,” he said.
