US President Donald Trump has warned that he could face impeachment if Republicans lose control of Congress in this year’s November midterm elections.

Speaking to supporters during a campaign rally in South Carolina on Friday, Trump said that if Democrats take control of Congress, the final two years of his presidency would bring major turmoil for the United States.

At a rally in Myrtle Beach, the 80-year-old president said, “I’m going to be impeached. They’re going to impeach me,” while questioning what grounds Democrats would have for doing so.

Trump has previously faced impeachment twice, but survived both attempts after they failed to secure the required support in the Senate. Several Democratic leaders have openly backed a third impeachment effort, and at least three Democratic lawmakers have introduced impeachment resolutions against Trump during his second term. None of those efforts has made significant progress so far.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Democrats remain divided over whether to pursue impeachment. Some within the party fear that such a move could trigger a negative reaction among voters and distract from key issues such as the cost of living.

Democrats are widely expected to have a strong chance of regaining control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections. Several polls also indicate that they could potentially regain a majority in the Senate.

Trump, however, urged Republican voters to turn out, warning that his political opponents would damage the economy and reverse his administration’s policies if Republicans lose.

“If we lose, you’re going to lose your borders, you’re going to lose the tax cuts, you’re going to lose everything we’ve done,” he said.

Trump claimed his administration had delivered the largest tax-cutting initiative in US history. He also warned that measures such as tax exemptions on Social Security benefits for seniors and overtime pay would be reversed if Democrats returned to power.

“Your taxes are going to go up. Your paychecks are going to go down. You’re going to lose your jobs. Your businesses are going to close,” Trump said.

Another key objective of Trump’s South Carolina campaign visit was to rally support for Darline Graham. Following the death of Senator Lindsey Graham, his sister Darline Graham was appointed to the Senate in July and is now seeking election to the seat.

She failed to secure an outright victory in the Republican primary and will face a runoff on Tuesday.

The outcome is also important for Trump, as victories by candidates backed by him are seen as crucial to maintaining his influence within the Republican Party. However, three candidates endorsed by Trump lost in Republican primaries on Tuesday.

Addressing supporters in South Carolina, Trump urged voters to treat the midterm election as though his own name were on the ballot, even though he is not a candidate.

“They say, when Trump is on the ballot, we do well. When he’s not on the ballot, his people don’t come out,” he said, urging supporters to turn out and vote as if he were on the ballot.
