Brazil does not want a “new Cold War,” President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said ahead of his planned visit to Washington for talks with US President Donald Trump.
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi on Sunday after concluding his visit to India, Lula emphasized the need for equal treatment of all nations.
“I want to tell President Donald Trump that we do not want a new Cold War,” Lula said. “We do not want to interfere in the internal affairs of any other country. We want all countries to be treated equally.”
Lula is scheduled to meet Trump in Washington in the first week of March. According to the Brazilian president, the agenda for the meeting will include trade, immigration, investment and partnerships between universities in the two countries.
However, differences remain between the two leaders on several key issues. These include the war in Gaza, the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, and Trump’s proposed “Peace Council” initiative.
Despite the policy disagreements, Lula signaled that Brazil is seeking constructive engagement with the United States while maintaining its independent foreign policy stance.
