North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been re-elected as Secretary-General of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, further extending his 15-year leadership of the party and the country.
According to a report by the state news agency KCNA, the election took place on Sunday during the fourth day of the party congress. Members of the party’s Central Committee were also elected at the المؤتمر, and several party rules were reportedly amended, though no detailed explanation was provided.
The Workers’ Party of Korea holds its congress every five years.
Kim Jong Un has led North Korea since 2011, following the death of his father, Kim Jong Il. In 2019, the country’s parliament amended the constitution to consolidate Kim’s authority over all state affairs, formally declaring him head of state.
At this year’s party congress, Kim reviewed the party’s performance over the past five years and outlined new plans and targets for the next five-year period.
During the opening session, he said, “The past five years have been a proud period in advancing our socialist goals in our own style.” However, he acknowledged that international sanctions and global public health crises posed significant challenges.
North Korea’s Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui and other senior officials also addressed the congress.
Ahead of the event, Kim unveiled dozens of nuclear-capable rocket launchers at a ceremony, describing them as “remarkable” and “impressive,” in a move seen as reinforcing the country’s military posture amid ongoing regional tensions.
