Russia has become the first country to send humanitarian assistance to Iran amid the worsening situation caused by the ongoing war.
Acting on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin, a special Russian aircraft carrying 13 tons of emergency medical supplies and medicines has already reached its destination.
The Kremlin took this step to help address the severe crisis facing Iranian hospitals as tensions continue to escalate with the United States and Israel.
The large relief consignment was transported on a special IL-76 aircraft operated by Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations. The aircraft landed in Azerbaijan, from where the medical supplies were delivered by road to the Iranian Red Crescent Society.
In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the emergency aid was sent in response to a special request from Tehran. Continuous bombardment over the past several weeks and the growing number of civilian casualties have pushed Iran’s healthcare system to the brink of collapse.
Since the conflict began on February 28, the strategic alliance between Iran and Russia has taken on a new dimension. At the outset of the attacks, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reportedly killed. Following his death, Russia has also expressed support for the process of transferring power to his son, Mojtaba Khamenei.
Although naval traffic in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted due to the war, the land route through Azerbaijan is currently serving as a crucial lifeline for Iran.
