In a significant strategic move amid rising Middle East tensions, Iran has announced that vessels from Bangladesh and five other "friendly nations" can safely navigate the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking to state media this Thursday (March 26), Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi clarified that the strategic waterway is not entirely closed, contrary to Western reports.
He confirmed that ships from Bangladesh, India, China, Russia, Iraq, and Pakistan are permitted to transit under the protection of Iranian armed forces. However, a strict ban remains in place for vessels from the US, Israel, and other hostile entities.
This development comes as maritime traffic in the region has plummeted by 95% in the first 25 days of March, causing global energy prices to surge. According to Kpler data, only 155 ships have crossed the strait this month, mostly oil and gas tankers. Iran's latest directive aims to maintain trade ties with key partners while asserting its control over the world's most vital energy corridor, through which 20% of the globe's oil flows.
