Iran has staged a large government-backed mass wedding ceremony for citizens who say they are prepared to sacrifice their lives in the event of war with the United States or Israel.
The event, described by Iranian media as both festive and patriotic, took place Monday night across several areas of Tehran. Hundreds of couples participated, including more than a hundred brides and grooms gathered at Imam Hossein Square in the Iranian capital. State television broadcast the ceremony nationwide, reportedly as part of efforts to boost public morale amid threats from U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to Iranian media, the program is called “Janfada,” a Persian term meaning “self-sacrifice.” Participants in the initiative have pledged readiness to defend the country during wartime. Organizers said volunteers would even serve as human shields outside critical infrastructure sites, such as power plants, if attacked by the United States or Israel.
Iranian authorities claim that millions of people have joined the broader campaign. Among those associated with the initiative are President Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
Since the outbreak of regional tensions, Iranian officials have increasingly organized pro-government rallies and public demonstrations aimed at strengthening national unity and public support for the state.
At Monday night’s ceremony in Imam Hossein Square, couples arrived in military jeeps mounted with machine guns. The wedding stage itself was decorated with balloons and traditional celebratory ornaments, creating a striking contrast between festivity and militaristic symbolism.
A young bride, speaking anonymously, said, “The country is definitely in a state of war, but young people still have the right to marry.”
One groom attending the event added, “We came to offer good wishes to the people in the streets.”
