Despite a massive wave of recent air strikes and escalating geopolitical friction surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, the funeral procession for Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei proceeded uninterrupted as his coffin arrived in the holy Iraqi city of Najaf today (Wednesday, July 8).

Thousands of mourners gathered to pay their final respects just hours after the domestic Central Command (CENTCOM) executed a rigorous four-hour operation hitting over 80 targets inside Iran. This intervention was reportedly launched in direct retaliation for Iranian strikes against three commercial vessels transiting the strategic waterway.

In a swift counter-offensive, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) deployed drones and missiles targeting 85 critical installations housing domestic troops across Bahrain and Kuwait. While the direct military exchange has plunged the Middle East into profound uncertainty, it failed to deter the scheduled state rituals in Iraq, where the government declared a national holiday. The late Supreme Leader, who was killed in a strike on February 28, is being honored in Najaf's revered Imam Ali Shrine before the procession moves northward to Karbala. Following the conclusion of spiritual ceremonies in Iraq, Khamenei's remains will be repatriated back to Iran for his final burial in the northeastern city of Mashhad on Thursday.
