More Than 20,000 Evacuated as Fast-Moving Wildfire Spreads in British Columbia

More than 20,000 people have been ordered to evacuate after a rapidly spreading wildfire swept through areas surrounding Okanagan Lake in Canada's British Columbia province.

According to local broadcaster CTV News, evacuation orders have been issued for the entire town of Summerland, home to nearly 12,000 residents. Authorities have also instructed about 8,000 people in Peachland and nearby communities to leave their homes as the wildfire continues to expand.

The fire was first reported on Friday evening and spread across nearly 50 square kilometres within just a few hours. The small community of Faulder has also suffered significant damage.

Videos circulating on social media show homes engulfed in flames as residents rushed to flee the area. Heavy traffic congestion formed on southbound highways leading toward Penticton as thousands attempted to evacuate.

Emergency Information Officer Eric Thompson described the blaze as one of the fastest-growing and fastest-moving wildfires the region has ever experienced.

As conditions deteriorated, Thompson said he was forced to leave the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) to evacuate his own family.

"I had to leave the Emergency Operations Centre to get my family out of the area. We are heading south," Thompson said.

He urged residents to evacuate immediately and to check on neighbours who may need assistance.

"This is an extremely concerning situation for all of us. We need to stay strong—for our loved ones, and especially for those who need help and support. Please check on your neighbours," he added.

Authorities continue to monitor the rapidly evolving wildfire, while emergency crews work to contain the blaze and protect affected communities.
