Putin Calls Elon Musk a ‘Genius’ Over Satellite Network Achievements

Putin’s remarks came as Russia steps up efforts to develop its own satellite-based internet network to strengthen its capabilities in space communications.

Speaking during a visit to an exhibition on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow on Wednesday, Putin highlighted Musk’s achievements in the space industry.

“Elon Musk is a genius, a real genius,” Putin said, referring to the scale of Musk’s satellite operations.

“How many units does he have in orbit? More than 5,000. And we are only taking our first steps,” the Russian president added.

Putin also stressed the importance of maintaining close communication with the United States on space-related matters to ensure that the two countries’ activities in orbit do not interfere with one another.

“We maintain very close contact with our American partners, including Mr Musk,” Putin said, emphasising the need to prevent either side from disrupting the other’s operations in space.

Musk’s SpaceX has become a major player in the global space industry, launching satellites and providing launch services for commercial and government customers, including NASA.

The company also operates Starlink, a satellite-based internet network that provides connectivity in many parts of the world.

Russia, meanwhile, has long been a major space power, with extensive experience in both civilian and military space programmes. Moscow is now intensifying efforts to develop an independent satellite internet network for communications and other strategic purposes.

Putin’s comments underscore the scale of the challenge facing Russia as it seeks to expand its presence in satellite communications while navigating the increasingly strategic role of commercial space operators such as SpaceX.
