Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara has presented a sacred piece of the Kiswa—the cloth covering the Holy Kaaba—to the historic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. The rare and highly valued gift was originally presented to him by Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during President Al-Shara’s first official foreign visit to the Kingdom.

According to reports by Akhbar 24, President Al-Shara confirmed the development during his address marking Syria’s Independence Day anniversary.

The President stated that during his inaugural visit to Saudi Arabia after assuming office, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman honored him with this exceptional gift, which bears beautifully embroidered verses from the Holy Qur’an.

Explaining his decision, President Al-Shara said,
“Placing this piece of the Kiswa in the Umayyad Mosque symbolizes the strengthening of the bonds of brotherhood between Makkah Al-Mukarramah and Syria. I chose to present it here as a gesture of unity and spiritual connection.”

He added that he wished to commemorate Syria’s Independence Day anniversary by placing the sacred cloth within one of the nation’s most revered historical sites.
