President Donald Trump is seriously considering withdrawing the United States from the NATO after the alliance failed to join a conflict against Iran, according to an interview published Wednesday by The Telegraph.

In the interview, Trump described NATO as a “paper tiger,” expressing frustration over what he sees as a lack of support from allied nations. He stated that once the United States withdraws from the alliance, there would be no question of rejoining it after the Iran conflict ends.

The tensions follow a military escalation that began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran. In response, Iran reportedly moved to restrict access to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes.

Trump had called on allied nations to deploy naval forces to the region to ensure the passage remained open. However, the lack of response from European partners has raised doubts within the U.S. administration about the reliability of its defense allies.

When asked whether the United States would reconsider its NATO membership after the conflict, Trump said, “Oh yes, I would say it’s beyond reconsideration.” He added that he has never been impressed by NATO and has long believed the alliance to be ineffective, claiming that even Vladimir Putin shares that view.

The remarks signal a potential shift in U.S. foreign policy and could have significant implications for transatlantic security cooperation.
