Donald Trump has proposed a massive $1.5 trillion defense budget for the 2027 fiscal year, citing the escalating costs of the ongoing Iran conflict and the need to maintain global security commitments.

The proposal, submitted to lawmakers on Friday, represents a more than 40 percent increase in spending for the Pentagon compared to the previous year—marking the largest surge since World War II.

According to a report by Agence France-Presse (AFP), the financial strain of the Iran war—now in its fifth consecutive week—is clearly reflected in the proposed budget. Media reports citing closed-door congressional briefings indicate that the United States is spending nearly $2 billion per day on the conflict.

The increased allocation is aimed at replenishing depleted ammunition and weapons stockpiles while sustaining ongoing military operations.

However, the proposed defense boost comes alongside significant cuts to domestic spending. The White House has suggested reducing internal expenditures by approximately $73 billion, or 10 percent. These cuts are expected to impact public welfare programs, including environmental protection, housing assistance, and education.

Defending the proposal, Trump described the cuts as necessary during wartime, stating that military investment must take priority. He also signaled that responsibilities for social programs such as daycare, Medicaid, and Medicare could be shifted to state governments.

Under the plan, $1.1 trillion of the defense budget would be approved through the regular legislative process, while the remaining $350 billion would be passed through a special partisan mechanism that would not require support from Democrats.

While Republican leaders have responded positively, some within the party have raised concerns over the growing fiscal deficit. The United States currently faces an annual budget deficit nearing $2 trillion, with total national debt exceeding $39 trillion.

In addition to defense spending, the proposal includes an extra $40 billion allocation for the Justice Department.

Democrats have strongly opposed the plan. In a statement posted on social media, they said, “The American people want healthcare, not war. The Trump administration is spending billions on a reckless war with Iran while refusing to increase funding for healthcare. This is deeply inhumane, and we will oppose it.”
