In a last-ditch diplomatic effort to halt the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, mediators have proposed a 45-day ceasefire, which would temporarily suspend hostilities and strategically reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal was sent to both nations on Sunday night.

The initiative comes amid heightened tensions as President Donald Trump has threatened large-scale strikes against Iran. He warned that if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened by 8:00 PM Tuesday, U.S. forces would target Iranian power plants and other critical infrastructure.

The White House has stated that Trump has not yet approved or signed the ceasefire plan. A senior official noted that the proposal is one of several options under consideration, and that U.S. military operations against Iran are continuing at normal pace. President Trump is expected to address the conflict in a press conference on Monday at 1:00 PM.

Countries including Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey have attempted to mediate, but talks have largely stalled since last week. The new proposal has been officially delivered to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Mediators hope that a 45-day temporary pause could create a window for a more permanent resolution.

Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly indicated reluctance to accept the temporary ceasefire, arguing that a pause would allow adversaries to regroup and strengthen their positions. However, mediators remain optimistic that a solution could emerge before Trump’s Tuesday deadline, according to reporting by Axios.
