U.S. President Donald Trump held a high-level summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, marking the most significant part of his official visit to China.

At the opening of the talks on Thursday, Trump described Xi as a “great leader” and said he envisioned an “extraordinary future” for relations between the two countries. Referring to the Chinese president as his “friend,” Trump called the meeting a great honor for himself.

Despite the ceremonial significance and grand atmosphere surrounding the summit, analysts believe major breakthroughs on sensitive issues such as trade, Taiwan, and tensions linked to the Iran conflict remain unlikely.

Praising Xi’s leadership, Trump said the two nations had managed to quickly resolve differences in the past through direct phone conversations. “You are a great leader. Some people may not like me saying that, but it is true — you are great. We have a wonderful future together,” Trump said.

Trump was accompanied on the trip by several leading American business figures, including Jensen Huang of Nvidia and Elon Musk of Tesla. The U.S. president aims to accelerate agreements involving agricultural exports and passenger aircraft sales to China, while also proposing a permanent bilateral board to prevent future tariff disputes and trade wars similar to those seen last year.

In his opening remarks, Xi highlighted the current instability and transformation in global politics, saying the world is undergoing changes unseen in a century. He stressed that stable relations between China and the United States are essential during such uncertain times.

Xi also referred to the concept of the “Thucydides Trap” — the theory that conflict between a rising power and an established power can become unavoidable. He questioned whether the two countries could avoid that path and instead establish a new model of cooperation. According to Xi, the world is closely watching the summit, and both nations should choose collaboration over confrontation for the sake of humanity’s future.

Although the discussions began in a cordial atmosphere, several unresolved issues continue to overshadow the summit. Among the most sensitive are Washington’s approval of an $11 billion arms sale to Taiwan and Trump’s dissatisfaction with Beijing’s efforts to curb fentanyl trafficking.

Meanwhile, Xi emphasized the impact of the Iran conflict and the importance of joint efforts in addressing global challenges. The two-day summit is primarily aimed at restoring some stability to bilateral relations. Trump is expected to conclude his historic Beijing visit on Friday with a private meeting with Xi Jinping.
