A tense situation unfolded aboard a flight cruising at 35,000 feet when a passenger’s disruptive behavior forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing.

The incident occurred on Qantas flight QF21, which was traveling from Melbourne to Dallas. The flight departed at around 2:00 p.m. on Friday, and everything reportedly remained normal for nearly seven hours before the disturbance began.

According to reports, the passenger became increasingly agitated and allegedly said he wanted to “step outside for a cigarette.” The situation escalated when he reportedly bit a flight attendant. Cabin crew members, assisted by several passengers, intervened to bring the situation under control.

A spokesperson for Qantas said the safety of passengers and crew is the airline’s highest priority, adding that the company maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward disruptive or threatening behavior onboard.

A video circulating on social media shows the passenger arguing heatedly with cabin crew members. When instructed to move toward the rear of the aircraft, he responded with abusive language. At one point, he reportedly insisted that he only wanted to go outside to smoke.

As the situation worsened, the aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia. Local authorities removed the passenger from the plane after landing.

Qantas later confirmed that the passenger has been permanently banned from flying with both Qantas and Jetstar.

After a delay of around 35 minutes, the flight resumed its journey to Dallas and arrived at its destination the following day.
