The United States is seeking to secure greater control over Greenland through ongoing confidential discussions involving American, Danish, and Greenlandic officials, according to a recent report by The New York Times.

The report says the talks have been taking place in Washington over the past four months.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in establishing American control over Greenland, citing national security concerns and the need to counter the growing influence of Russia and China in the Arctic region.

According to the report, one of the main goals of the discussions has been to ease tensions caused by Trump’s previous threats to take Greenland by force and to prevent the issue from creating divisions within the NATO alliance.

However, Greenland’s leaders are reportedly concerned about plans for a significantly expanded U.S. military presence on the island. Officials fear that once the Iran conflict subsides, Trump could renew pressure over Greenland.

The report also states that Washington wants to revise longstanding military agreements so that U.S. forces could remain in Greenland indefinitely, even if the island eventually gains full independence from Denmark. Whether Greenland’s population would accept such an arrangement remains uncertain.

In addition, the United States is reportedly exploring cooperation on Greenland’s valuable natural resources, including oil, uranium, and rare earth minerals. Washington also aims to limit Russian and Chinese involvement in major investment projects on the island.

The report further claims that the Pentagon is moving ahead with plans to increase its military presence in southern Greenland.
