U.S. President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday, discussing a range of issues including American–Turkish relations, developments in the Middle East, the Iran ceasefire, Syria, and NATO.

Turkey’s Communications Directorate said President Erdogan described the extension of the Iran ceasefire as a “positive development” and stressed that “reasonable solutions” to disputed issues are possible.

Erdogan reportedly said Turkey would continue to support constructive initiatives aimed at resolving regional conflicts. He also described the establishment of lasting stability in Syria as a “major achievement for the entire region.”

The Turkish president added that Ankara would maintain its support for Syria and emphasized the need to prevent further deterioration of the situation in Lebanon.

He also highlighted preparations for an upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, saying efforts were underway to ensure its success.

Following the call, President Trump spoke to reporters in Maryland, where he praised his relationship with Erdogan, calling him “a tough leader” and saying he has a unique working relationship with him.

“He is actually doing a good job. Some may question it, but I think he is a great ally for the United States,” Trump said.
