A tragic shooting incident near a World Cup host venue in Kansas City has left one Argentine football supporter dead and at least four others seriously injured, raising fresh concerns about security during the tournament.
The attack occurred late Thursday night when gunfire was reportedly directed at an Uber vehicle carrying Argentine fans. The vehicle's driver was among those injured in the incident.
According to local police, multiple shootings were reported across the city between 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Several gunfire incidents also took place along Interstate 70 and Interstate 670 near Arrowhead Stadium, where the Argentina–Algeria World Cup match was being played at the time.
Authorities have identified a 22-year-old suspect who remains at large and has been classified as "armed and dangerous."
Witnesses traveling in the Uber said another vehicle pulled alongside them and opened fire. The driver was struck in the leg, although passengers initially believed the sound had come from a blown tire.
Police confirmed that the Uber driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently receiving treatment in hospital. However, one of the seriously injured Argentine supporters later died from his wounds. Several other fans remain hospitalized with severe injuries.
Following the attack, local authorities significantly increased security measures in the affected area and around World Cup-related venues.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns about public safety and security arrangements in host cities during the tournament, as thousands of international supporters continue to travel across the United States to attend World Cup matches.
Investigators are continuing their search for the suspect and have urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact law enforcement immediately.
