A powerful heat wave has gripped large parts of the central and eastern United States, forcing the cancellation or postponement of numerous Independence Day events, including parades, concerts, and fireworks displays.

In several cities, soaring temperatures became so intense that reports emerged of shoe soles softening and sticking to the pavement as people walked on sun-baked streets.

In the nation's capital, Washington, D.C., excessive heat led to the cancellation of several public gatherings. The "Great American State Fair," organized on the National Mall as part of President Donald Trump's celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States, was temporarily suspended on Friday afternoon when temperatures reached 101°F (38°C).

For public safety reasons, the National Park Service also canceled Washington's Independence Day parade. Similar disruptions affected the historic Salute to Independence Parade in Philadelphia, a parade in Haddon Township, New Jersey, and concert and fireworks events in Watertown, New York. In Boston, organizers delayed public entry to the city's annual riverside fireworks celebration by four hours because of the extreme heat.

Meteorologists attributed the scorching conditions to a "heat dome," a high-pressure system that has spread across the Midwest and the East Coast throughout the week. According to the National Weather Service, more than 185 million people were under heat-related alerts on Friday, with heat index values in some areas forecast to reach 115°F (46°C).

The heat has also affected daily life and infrastructure. In New York City, some pedestrians reported their shoe soles softening on the overheated streets of Manhattan. Rising electricity demand has placed additional strain on power systems, prompting the regional grid operator PJM Interconnection to urge consumers to conserve electricity. Utility provider Con Edison reported that nearly 17,000 customers were without power as of Friday afternoon.

Weather officials warned that the ongoing heat wave could be life-threatening and advised residents to stay hydrated, remain in shaded or air-conditioned areas whenever possible, and watch for signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Despite the extreme temperatures, enthusiastic fans of pop superstar Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce gathered outside Madison Square Garden in New York, waiting for hours in the heat in hopes of catching a glimpse of celebrity guests arriving for the couple's reported wedding celebration.
