US President Donald Trump has threatened to completely obliterate Iran while simultaneously expressing optimism about reaching a formal agreement with Tehran following the upcoming US midterm elections.

Addressing world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Trump stated that the ongoing military campaign was launched to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Posing a stark ultimatum, he questioned whether he should strike a deal allowing the Islamic Republic to rebuild or "obliterate" the nation swiftly to ensure it can never threaten others. Trump expressed firm confidence that Tehran would come to terms immediately after November’s midterm elections, a period during which his Republican Party faces congressional risks largely driven by public fatigue and soaring fuel prices tied to the unpopular war.

Elsewhere in his speech, Trump warned of the imminent collapse of communist Cuba and touted Washington's unyielding military dominance in Latin America. He also championed a newly signed agreement to establish two US military bases in Greenland, a move that has nevertheless caused friction among traditional NATO allies. Earlier, outgoing UN Secretary-General António Guterres opened the session with strict warnings regarding the Palestinian crisis, climate degradation, and the unchecked risks of artificial intelligence.
