A lighthearted offer by a lawmaker to personally provide a microwave oven to a fellow member of parliament sparked a brief debate in Bangladesh's 13th National Parliament during the ongoing budget session.

The controversy originated from a proposal made during Wednesday's budget discussion by Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Mizanur Rahman, who called for government-provided flats allocated to MPs to be equipped with washing machines, microwave ovens, and curtains.

During Thursday's session, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) Chairman Andalib Rahman Partho referred to the proposal while speaking on a point of order. In a humorous tone, he remarked that if the lawmaker genuinely needed a microwave oven, he would be willing to provide one personally.

The comment drew a strong response from Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, who argued that the remark was inappropriate and could be viewed as disrespectful.

"He is an experienced parliamentarian," Shafiqur Rahman said. "But he immediately offered to provide everything himself. Did anyone ask him for that? Our mindset should be such that we do not undermine anyone's dignity while speaking in this House."

The opposition leader emphasized that the original proposal had been made on behalf of all MPs residing in government housing rather than for any individual's personal benefit. He also expressed hope that all lawmakers, including himself, would exercise greater caution in future parliamentary debates.

As the exchange continued, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed intervened and urged members not to prolong the discussion.

The Speaker noted that budget debates allow lawmakers to raise concerns regarding their facilities and working conditions. While he suggested that the issue might have been better left unmentioned due to possible public perceptions, he stressed that it should not be treated as a serious offense.

He further explained that the parliamentary House Committee is responsible for determining and providing necessary furnishings and facilities for members residing in official accommodations.

"There's no need to make an issue out of this," the Speaker said. "If we continue arguing over such a minor matter, it could send the wrong message to the public."

Responding to the opposition leader's concerns, the Speaker also observed that offering personal assistance to a fellow MP in such a context could be interpreted as disrespectful, since the original request had not been made for personal gain but for all lawmakers living in government-provided residences.

The exchange concluded with a call from the Speaker for all members to exercise greater responsibility and sensitivity in their parliamentary remarks.
