Trump Appeals Ruling Dismissing $10 Billion Lawsuit Against U.S. Government

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has appealed a federal court ruling that dismissed his $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the U.S. Treasury, while also invalidating a controversial settlement agreement reached between the parties.

The dispute began in January, when Trump sued the IRS and the Treasury Department, seeking $10 billion in damages over the alleged leak of confidential tax records. The leaked documents reportedly showed that Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes in both 2016 and 2017.

Instead of proceeding to trial, the case was resolved through a settlement agreement that quickly drew criticism. Under the deal, Trump, his family, and his businesses would have been shielded from future IRS audits. The agreement also proposed the creation of a $1.776 billion compensation fund, financed with public money.

U.S. District Judge Kathleen M. Williams later rejected the settlement, describing the lawsuit as lacking legal merit and suggesting it appeared designed to use the judicial process to legitimize a prearranged agreement.

According to the ruling, both the plaintiff and the government defendants appeared to be advancing the same institutional interests rather than engaging in a genuine legal dispute. Judge Williams voided the settlement and recommended sanctions against Trump's attorney, Alejandro Brito, along with others involved in the case.

As a result of the ruling, the proposed compensation fund was scrapped, and the legal protections from IRS audits outlined in the agreement were eliminated, potentially allowing future tax-related investigations involving Trump to proceed.

Trump's legal team has now appealed the decision, arguing that the district judge exceeded her authority. They maintain that the lawsuit was a legitimate effort to hold the government accountable for the alleged disclosure of confidential tax information.
