The Bangladesh Army has set a remarkable example by constructing homes for flood-affected families at less than half the allocated budget under a special housing project. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus highly praised the Army for this achievement.

Following a directive from the Chief Adviser, a fund of Tk 50 crore was allocated last year to build homes for 300 families affected by severe flooding. However, officials from the Army’s 24th and 33rd divisions successfully completed the construction of these homes at a cost of only Tk 24.98 crore.

This information was revealed during a key-handover ceremony held in four districts, with the Chief Adviser joining the event virtually from his office in Tejgaon at 10:30 am on Wednesday (April 30). Chief of Army Staff General Waker-uz-Zaman and other top government officials were also present.

At the ceremony, house keys were handed over to 300 flood-affected families through the local administration.
Yunus expressed deep appreciation for the Bangladesh Army and said he hoped the military would continue to stand by the nation during future disasters.

In August and September 2024, devastating floods struck 22 upazilas across Feni, Noakhali, Cumilla, and Chattogram districts in the southeastern region of the country, leaving many homes completely destroyed. Following this, the Chief Advisor instructed the construction of new homes for families who had lost their residences.

A decision was taken to build 300 homes across the four districts through the Armed Forces, with Tk 50 crore allocated from the Chief Advisor’s Relief Fund for the initiative.

Construction was carried out using two approved designs-one measuring 492 square feet and the other 500 square feet. The Army’s 24th and 33rd divisions completed the work at less than half the budgeted cost.

According to the report presented at the event, 110 houses were built in six upazilas of Feni, 90 in seven upazilas of Noakhali, 70 in six upazilas of Cumilla, and 30 in three upazilas of Chattogram-making up the total of 300 homes.

During the ceremony, several recipients expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Advisor and the Bangladesh Army. They said they had felt devastated and helpless after losing everything to the floods, with no place to shelter their families. Thanks to the initiative and support, they now have a place to call home.
